I like the qotd concept, and always have. It’s amazing to me that such a simple tool can be so interesting. As implemented since the dawn of time on UNIX systems, fortune offers an astonishing amount of functionality in such a trivial program: basically, it just pulls out a random quote listed in a simple text file, but with lots of command-line knobs and dials.
Meanwhile, here are few pages I’ve found that do something similar:
- Quotes of the Day but watch out for the popups
- QOTD.org has plenty of quotes to browse through
- Quotes and Sayings – Quotations from TooManyQuotes.com seems to be more heavily weighted to popular culture and modern quotes (like, from TV) but still plenty of fun
And you may notice widgets in the sidebar at the right that may or may not display random quotes. I’m experimenting, so don’t be surprised if some of the quotes aren’t particularly random, interesting, or even different from time to time.
